A seven-mile stretch of the I-5 in Corona that has been closed for more than nine hours a day this week will reopen on Friday.

The closure will close about eight miles of travel lanes in Corona and motorists are asked to use alternative routes.

The freeway closure was part of a long-planned project to widen the freeway, but officials said the $1.3 billion construction would only be done if all the required environmental, public health and safety approvals were in place. The plan is years behind schedule, partly because of a legal wrangling with the city over a property deal.

The closure this week was prompted by construction of the new elevated section of the freeway, which started in July. The project is needed to address the traffic volume that grew as the Bay Area’s population has grown.

In addition, construction will widen the freeway to a new standard – called a six-lane configuration – that will allow more vehicles to use the lanes at higher speeds, the freeway officials said. Drivers who are unable to get onto the new elevated section because of the freeway closure will be able to go to the other side of the freeway by using Exit 4D – which is not open to traffic – or by taking the nearby Highway 41 Westbound.
