Here’s how the league’s teams stack up now that the regular season is over

NEW YORK (CBS Sports) — As the season ends, it’s easy to look at the current playoff positions, look at how the season ended, and think about where everything should go next.

For the most part, the playoffs begin where they ended a season ago.

“This is the place to measure what you’re doing as an organization,’’ said Nets coach Kenny Atkinson before Game 3 of the first-round series against the Cavaliers.

“The first thing you can do is just try to get good people in the locker room and we’ll see what happens,’’ said Atkinson. “And then you start to look at how people perform, but again — it’s like anything. Sometimes it’s a little slow, but you never are too far away from good.’’

The Nets have finished 26-15 and have made the playoffs just once in the past five seasons. They’ve been to two consecutive NBA Finals — losing both times against LeBron James’s Cavs — they’ve had the most regular season wins of any NBA team since the 2012-13 season, but have yet to win a playoff series.

This season, the Nets have had their share of ups and downs, but they’ve also had some good and some not-so-good moments. They’ve played good defense and made the extra pass during crunch time, but they don’t have much of what you look for in a winning team: “A guy who gives you 40, but you don’t have him.’’

On the flip side, they’ve played like the teams that failed to break through in the playoffs.
