‘More grand slams’: Carlos Alcaraz already has sights set on 2023 glory after US Open triumph
Carlos Alcaraz is ready to make history after a stunning US Open triumph on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Spaniard produced a sublime left-right combination for the first time on a hard Centre Court and put himself out in front 1-0 in the opening game.
Ahead 3-1 after the first set, Alcaraz’s opponent, Janko Tipsarevic, was knocked out by a vicious cross-court backhand.
Tipsarevic took another step towards victory through his second service game before falling.
But the Spaniard, who has never been a man to accept defeat (he twice ended the Australian Open in the third round at Flushing Meadows) went on to take the first set 6-4 to advance.
His second set was more challenging, as he fell twice more to the world number one’s serve, before eventually falling agonisingly short in the decider.
