Granderson: Kanye West’s life and art are one. You don’t have to keep watching the same music. I can’t be like, oh, I don’t like “We Don’t Care.” I have to see where his art is going. He’s been on the cusp for a long time, really. When you think of the history of music, the first thing you think of is the Beatles and the way they did it, and then you think of the music that came before and you think of how they did it, you know? Music has gone through a lot of changes and he’s been a part of them. I hope that this album takes him in a new direction and that people see it as his best one. That’s what I hope for him.
The new album is called Can’t Tell Me Nothing. And a good example of what he’s saying is on “We Don’t Care” he says, “We don’t have to talk about nothing right now.” He’s talking about people who don’t talk to him all the time and he doesn’t want to talk to them all the time, and he’s not willing to give up and have nothing to say. That’s his way of saying, “You know, I don’t want right now to feel like I don’t have anything to say.” I think he puts it in the song in terms of what he would rather do than talk to people all the time. He wants to do his art. And he wants to do his art his way and he wants to do it his way and he wants to do his art and he wants to make music and he wants to make art and he doesn’t want to talk to everyone all the time. That’s his thing. He doesn’t want to talk to people all the time.
