US orders families of embassy employees to depart Nigeria due to heightened risk of terrorism: U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria – (CNN) The United States has ordered all staff members at its embassy in Nigeria to depart the country due to the heightened risk of a terrorist attack, the State Department said Friday.
The Department of State ordered the staff members to depart on Friday and advised the U.S. citizens in Nigeria to take cover, according to an alert letter on the State Department website.
The American Embassy in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, is scheduled to close Friday evening.
This comes about a week after an Islamic extremist group claimed responsibility for the March 22 rocket attack that wounded seven Japanese tourists at a popular tourist spot in Abuja and killed one.
